-masen (ません)

In Japanese, "-masen" (ません) is a polite verb ending that creates a present or future tense negative statement, formed by replacing the polite "-masu" (ます) ending of a verb. For example, the verb "yomimasu" (to read) becomes "yomimasen" (to not read). It can also be used with a question particle ("-ka") to politely invite someone to do something, such as "tabemasen ka" (won't you eat? / would you like to eat?).
